German Environmental Protection Projects in the Land of the Rising Sun

The poster campaign concerning sustainable consumption begins its tour of 250 locations at the end of July in Japan.

"Germany in Japan" - this is the title used by Japan's Crown Prince Naruhito and Germany's President Horst Köhler at the opening of the "Germany year" in Tokyo at the beginning of April. "DBU in Japan" will become the new title in July when the "Sustainable Consumption in Germany - Passing the Earth's Future onto the Next Generation" poster campaign is presented to the public for the first time at Tokyo's Shinjuku train station. Numerous promotion projects of the German Foundation for the Environment (DBU, Osnabrück), including the PIUS-Internet-Portal, the Webportal for medium sized enterprises for Cleaner Production (PIUS) will be presented on 25 posters to be sent to 250 interested parties such as communities, Non-Government Organisations (NGOs), schools and universities. PIUS increases an enterprise's competitiveness, results in cost reductions, the efficient application of raw materials and energy, as well as contributing to process optimisation of operational output and material flow. And this is not only true for Germany - PIUS is suitable for all continents and all industrial and production areas.

 Cleantool - a comprehensive database
 for the metal cleaning industry

As an addition to the existing offer of practically oriented support, the PIUS-Internet-Portal now provides a link to the Cleantool database. With this tool, research can be carried out regarding types of cleaning agents, cleaning processes and various industry specific cleaning approaches for the metal industry. The procedures and processes illustrated and compared are those practised by enterprises.

All the information is based on detailed analyses within the scope of an EU project in seven European countries. The Kooperationsstelle Hamburg was responsible for this project between 2001 and 2004.

 New Partners in the PIUS-Internet-Portal

March 2005  

The level of interest in the PIUS subject remains high and we are delighted to welcome two new partners to our Portal. As a result of this, Bavaria is now represented in the network for the first time.

The Trifolium-Beratungsgesellschaft mbH from Friedberg in Hessen is heavily involved in the subject of the sustainable economy and process optimisation in enterprises. Within the scope of the project, practically oriented tools have been developed which have contributed to the improvement of the organisational structure, the process flow, employee motivation and qualifications, and, in particular, securing the future of enterprise locations.


The BIfA - Bayerisches Institut für Angewandte Umweltforschung und -technik GmbH in Augsburg has existed since 1991. As a link between scientific and economic fields, numerous project findings and experiences have been gathered. Their core competencies range from analysis, IPP and PIUS through to research of scientific foundations in industry projects.

 Ecological Fingerprint -
 Resource Efficiency in SMEs with PIUS

The Association of German Engineers (VDI) have published guideline 4075 page 1 concerning the subject of PIUS: 'Cleaner Production - PIUS - Basics and Application Areas'. The latest version is now available in printed format in both German and English. Here it is illustrated how medium sized enterprises can analyse and evaluate the integration of environmental protection measures in their production processes and the optimisation of such processes. This structured approach is achieved via six application steps in which the Effizienz-Agentur NRW's PIUS-Check is presented as an exemplary approach.

 Material Database "Oekopro"

January 2005  

After several years of editing, the revised version of the long-awaited ISO 14001 has now been released. Since the 01.02.2005, the German version of the environmental management standard, DIN EN ISO 14001:2005, has been officially enforced. The English version was passed in November 2004. The structure of the new standard and the basic approaches (PDCA-Model - Plan-Do-Check-Act) correspond to the previous version, DIN EN ISO 14001:1996, with only a few exceptions.

 Material Database "Oekopro"

An interesting extension has recently been made available on the PIUS-Internet-Portal. In this useful material database "Oekopro", which can be accessed via pius-info.de, users can acquire a quick overview of the application spectrum of individual chemicals in various industrial sectors (metal, print, paper, paint and varnish etc.)

The search can be carried out e.g. by various product or application classes in order to find the chemicals used for a particular industrial sector or product.
